They've set up a delivery network in collaboration with other traders to serve customers across the city and beyond so customers who'd normally travel into the city for their favourites can get them delivered to their doorsteps instead.

Mark Adams, who operates the well-known Billy Upton's butchers inside the Whitewalls entrance of the Indoor Market, said the move to online services and deliveries has been a real eye-opener for him and the wider market community.

He said: "We're currently supplying 400-plus households per week in and around Swansea, Neath and Llanelli.

"Several of these customers are ordering for family members and neighbouring households sometimes acting as community distribution hubs.

"A great example of this, is the village of Felindre where The Shepherds Inn are taking 40+ orders/deliveries per week from both ourselves and the bakers Davies of Mumbles to satisfy the needs of the local residents, many of which are elderly."

He added: "As a community it is vital for us all to pull together in a time of need and hopefully, when this time of uncertainty has passed, we can continue to supply our customers using the delivery service in future.

"I am very proud of what the Billy Upton team has achieved and I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our customers who have supported their local businesses over the last few weeks."

Mr Adams said the changes stemmed from the need to continue to provide essential food delivery services while also observing the critically-important social distancing rules that keep people safe, protect the NHS and help save lives.

But it's morphed into a whole new way of doing business that's benefiting market traders and customers alike.

Based out of the indoor market delivery area, traders are doing the rounds most days, delivering fruit, veg, meat and fresh bakery items that customers would not otherwise be able to get. These traders also include Hugh Phillips Gower Butcher, Get Fresh, The Choice is Yours, Brontosaurus, Country Quality Meats, Simpsons Butchers and Healthworld.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said the market's management team had helped facilitate the traders' ambition to stay in touch with their customers and provide essential food delivery services.

He said: "They say that necessity is the mother of invention and it's really good to see indoor market traders taking the initiative and finding ways to keep their businesses going and their customers supplied with essential foodstuffs.

"These are unprecedented times and they are presenting us all with unprecedented challenges. Swansea Indoor Market has always been at the heart of our city and the work being done by the traders demonstrates that it's still very much at the centre of our communities."
